Diablo IV — reckoning day: 3.1.1 lands, and the hotfix that never came
Last week we called a Death Trap hotfix "the single most likely tier-shaker." The correction: it never came. Rogues rode the bugged interaction all the way to Pit 150 while the week's actual casualty was Druid — and the community spent the week pointing at the double standard: when Barbarians found an infinite-Fury exploit and reached Tier 143, it was disabled within days; Rogue's equivalent has run untouched for two weeks.
Patch 3.1.1 arrives today, July 14, and it's the season's first real balance moment. Confirmed in the notes: the bug that stopped Lair Bosses and other sources dropping Mythics is fixed, naturally-dropped Mythics get better odds of rolling as Iconics, Mythic crafting drops from 5 Pandemonium Fragments to 4, and El'druin joins the Blacksmith's Mythic Cache — a genuinely player-friendly itemization pass. The bruise: the Storm Shepherd's Call Talisman toggle bug is fixed, and Druid's power drops measurably with it. Our #001 line about Druid's "deepest build variety" survives; its clear-third position may not.
Warlock stays last — two straight seasons now — with Lunatic still the best of a weak hand and no help in today's notes. The board updates within 24 hours of 3.1.1 settling; the open question we'll answer next week is whether Death Trap finally got its reckoning in deployment or writes another week of Pit 150 asterisks. Path of Exile 2 — an economy reset may be four weeks out
Six weeks into Runes of Aldur, the meta itself barely moved — Shield Wall Titan and Twister Monk still headline, Ice Shot Deadeye still owns the on-ramp — but the calendar news changes how you should spend. Reports point to patch 0.5.5 in late July: a one-month event league built on balance corrections and a soft economy reset, with no new core content, timed shortly after PoE1's July 24 league reveal. Treat it as provisional until GGG says it officially — but if it holds, last week's "good week to commit to a second character" advice gains a footnote: big-ticket purchases now have a shelf life, and the closer the reset gets, the more renting beats owning.
The more durable signal: GGG has openly acknowledged the ascendancy play-rate gap — Martial Artist, Spirit Walker and Gemling Legionnaire dominate the meta share while Infernalist, Invoker and Amazon sit under 5% — with broad ascendancy buffs planned. That's the shape of the pre-1.0 balance runway: ExileCon lands November 7–8, and 1.0 is still pointed at the end of the year. Price your build against the live economy with Mirrorcheck →
Marathon — Vault Breaker in one week, and tier lists won't work inside it
July 21 is now fully detailed, and the design is smarter than the headline. Vault Breaker is a PvE-only mode on Cryo Archive — solo, duo or trio — running a progressively harder series of vaults toward an entity at the bottom. The twist that matters: everyone plays a standardized Sponsored Kit, and nothing you find extracts except Vault Data, a mode-exclusive currency that upgrades the kit itself. It's a deliberately sealed parallel economy — Bungie's way of offering PvE tourists the game's best map without inflating the extraction loot pool.
The tier-list implication is worth saying plainly: inside Vault Breaker, loadout rankings are irrelevant by design — the kit is fixed, so shell choice and ability profile are what carry, which suits how this game has always worked. The same update ships Cradle Evolution (reset a maxed Cradle to zero for +1 maximum Energy and exclusive shell cosmetics — the first prestige loop) plus player profile stats. Season 3's September 22 Perimeter rework remains the bigger swing; July 21 is the test of whether PvE-curious Destiny refugees actually show up. Current Runner shell and weapon rankings →
The week ahead — what we're watching
Diablo IV: how 3.1.1 actually deploys — Druid's landing spot after the Storm Shepherd fix, and whether Death Trap's Pit 150 era ends today or earns a third week of asterisks; the board moves within 24 hours either way. PoE2: official word on 0.5.5 after PoE1's July 24 reveal — if the soft reset confirms, we'll publish spend-or-hold guidance for Runes of Aldur wallets. Marathon: July 21 itself — Vault Breaker rankings coverage will focus on shells, not loadouts, for the reasons above. Rankings on every board update within 24 hours of any of these breaking.
